Thyroid (part 1)

As she opens the door and walks in, it is clear that she is not herself.
Her face flushes, and her hands shake...
A drop of sweat drops down from her right temple, and her nervousness cannot be hidden.
She feels her pulse quickening and her heart thumping in her chest.

(Looking at me with her big eyes, she asked) What's wrong with me, doctor?
Miss Gravey, *showing her the result* you have hyperthyroidism.
(And yes those things mentioned are symptoms of hyperthyroidism)

Come again, what is that? Thyroid?

Thyroid hormones are hormones (ya, duh...😂), produced by Thyroid Gland that sits just below the Adam's apple, and the Thyroid Gland is closely monitored by the Pituitary Gland, that sits just between (slightly behind) the two eyeballs.
(Thyroid means shaped like a shield)

They function mainly to regulate our body's metabolism and basal metabolism rate, heart and vessels, growth and development.
They increases our basal metabolic rate thereby increasing our body temperature, burning our energy faster (getting slimmer faster), increasing our heart rate and blood pressure, also stimulate our body growths, increasing the absorbtion rate in the intestines etc.

Does sound like mostly good things right? So, more is good? not really...

Hyperthyroidism happens when too much thyoid hormones are secreted.
The patients suffering from this will experience:
1) Feeling hot and warm most of the time even in cold weathers.
2) Increase of anxiety and short tempered, and always on the tip of their toes (figuratively)
3) Increased heart rate and blood pressure, palpitations. If this continues for a long time, the patient will have a higher risk of developing cardiovascular and its related problems.
4) Hand tremors
5) Loss of weight
6) Protruding of eyeball (exophthalmus)
7) Possibility of developing mental health issues

Whereas Hypothyroidism happens when there is an insufficiency of thyroid hormones.
The patients will experience:
1) Increasing of body weight
2) Lethargy
3) Apathy (loss of interest and motivation) and depression
4) Lowered body temperature and easily feel cold
5) Slow heart rate
6) Constipation
7) Dry hair and hair loss
