We Will Do Our Best

"Doctor, how much time left do I have?"
"... Maybe 1 or 2 months... We can't say for sure..."
"Can you help me? I wish to spend a last new year with my family, and give "ang pow" to my grandchildren, and bless them for the last one time before I go."
"We will do our best..."

And deep down, I knew very well that with our very best knowledge and skill, we can help, we can try, but the final say dictates by the Almighty.

She had been there on that second bed for about a month, most of the time in the sitting position. The malignant cells had invaded her lungs, and she couldn't breath normally lying down. The pain from the metastasis in her back bone didn't make it any easier for her...
Once every few days, we had to puncture her sides to draw out the fluids that was drowning her from her pleural cavities.
She did not whine, she did not complain, nor did she become frustrated of her condition. She knew what was coming, and she was ready.
She was a warrior. She was a fighter.

As I was standing by her bed, I wondered, "Is there anything that I can do for her? Is there anyway I can make her feel better? Will the Author of life grant her her wish?"

Lives are in our hands... really? There even thousands of sicknesses and diseases that we can't treat, at least not yet.
A lot of times, our best may not be enough; but our best is what we are going to give.
How I wish there were more that we could do for her...
